Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Gary's Big Day Out

I'm not sure if it is age related or health related, but I find I prefer staying at home more and more. I'm turning into a hermit, and I am happy with this.

But it's not all about me... I am very aware Gary needs to get out of the house and one of the reasons moving south was to explore more of the mainland, which we... I... haven't been making time for.

So I really made an effort and today we went exploring Castle Hill to Arthur's Pass. What a fantastic day for it.

Castle Hill surely attracts the crowds, but is very spectacular and its no wonder Lord of the Rings and Narnia movie scenes were filmed in the area.

The Devils Punchbowl Waterfall is a 30 minute hike pretty much straight up hill, on a well formed track with stairs. Definitely worth the effort. A spectacular waterfall.

Lake Pearson

We will return in winter for a winter Wonderland experience and again next summer to explore the cass cave system some 560m...I can't wait.

A great day, and I admit, I should venture out more often 😜

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Do You Have A Financial Emergency Plan?

So you are a working class couple in the middle of your life, but do you have a financial emergency plan?

No...  be warned you are on your own should the shit hit the fan.

The government and WINZ are not there to help the working or middle class.  Harsh... but it's the truth.

If you are single... it's a different story, but in simple terms, the government expects you or your partner to take care of each other.

Why? It's cheaper for the government I guess but there are cut off points when it comes to "Joint Income Testing Thresholds".

I want to share our experience, to highlight why you need a plan. This isn't meant to be a middle age white man whinge, but more a shared experience, as you don't know what you don't know.

Since my Parkinson's diagnosis and the decline in my health, this has made me unemployable. I have applied for many jobs, even the basic of jobs and I disclose my condition, as I can't hide the tremors. I have been advised to lie, but that's not me. Well, initially my Seek profile didn't have my health condition disclosed, and a company contacted me to ask me to apply for a job they had listed. The job was very relevant  to my work history. So I applied and I then mentioned my condition, obviously down playing it. I  never heard from that company again. I would like to work, for an income but also for human contact which I miss. However even in my dr's own words "rapid deterioration... prevent his ability to work". So when you present with a health condition that makes you a liability to any potential employer, your options are limited. To be honest, I wouldn't have employed myself if a healthy able bodied person applied for the same job. But I am digressing a little.

So you are mid life, your two incomes is now down to one income. So what are your options?

You turn to WINZ:
Perhaps you can apply for the Job Seekers Benefit? NOPE
Perhaps the Supported Living Payment (for a health condition)? NOPE

Basically if you and your partner's combined income is more than $56,000 per year, you are not eligible for WINZ assistance.

You are not entitled to any benefit, or other assistance packages such as the winter energy payments or even more importantly for us, a community services card for cheaper dr's visits.  Even the WINZ branch manager here said to me, once you are receiving a benefit, there are many options to you. Until then... not a thing. They only offered to help me with my CV. Again it's very different if you are single... but 18 years with Gary, we are not ready to go our separate ways yet.

In some way, getting hit by a bus crossing the road might be preferable than getting sick, as you would have ACC.

So ask yourself... can the two of you survive on the one income?

$56,000 might sound a lot... but for 2 people with the NZ cost of living, it's a challenge.

Now I can go on about this... you pay your taxes as an individual, so why doesn't the welfare system look at you as an individual?

I've written to Andrew Little the health minister and Carmel Sepoluni the WINZ minister in regards to this and expensive GP visits. It doesn't seem right.

My personal individual income over the last year was less than $2000 and yet I am not eligible for any assistance from the government.

The GP visits are my biggest concern. I still need to pay $50 for a Dr's visit compared to a community services card holder who pays about $19. There is so much wrong with this. What if I was in a bad relationship, (I'm not) but the lack of financial independence could be so harmful to some people.

Now, many people have suggested that I lie... cheat the system. In theory if my partner takes a $1000 pay cut and I don't earn a cent, we technically would be eligible for a supported living payment of about $350 a week, plus the community services card! Should we work the system? It doesn't seem right... all I really want is cheaper dr's visits, I want to be able to afford to go to the dr when I need to... which unfortunately is often.

So in reality you have very few options if you are not prepared.

Fortunately, I was able to withdraw all of my Kiwisaver. However I was a bit ignorant with it early on. After my cancer scare in 2009, I remember seeing on tv someone terminally ill having great difficulties withdrawing his kiwisaver. He died before he could get access to it. So in my great wisdom, I decided to stop contributing, it's very unlikely I will reach 65 years of age with my health, and if I couldn't withdraw it earlier then it is no good to me. So for the last 6 years while I was working I opted out and stopped contributing. A stupid misguided mistake on my part. It was very easy to withdraw. So unfortunately I had very little in my Kiwisaver. So my advice... keep contributing to Kiwisaver!

The other option to consider is insurance. When we obtained our very first mortgage many years ago, we looked at insurance options. Income protection was too expensive so we opted for a life insurance policy with trauma cover, that would payout half the policy if we were unfortunate to become ill with a listed condition. Now we read the policy, and it seemed comprehensive.... but we didn't READ the policy. So Parkinson's is covered... but 2 years down the track we still haven't been able to claim as I dont currently meet the disability standards set and defined by some American medical journal. I'm sick enough for my Dr to advise not to work, sick enough for Kiwisaver to release my funds 20 years early, but not sick enough for the banks insurance policy conditions. I asked my neurologist and she was more confused than myself. In hindsight I wish we had shopped around a bit and looked into it a bit more.

We are surving without government assistance, but it's hard.

How did we do it? Down sizing, getting rid of debt and cutting the fat out of everything. Also give some thought as to what you can do in self employment, as even if it's just $100 a week it all helps.

All things considered, I think we are very lucky. We are surving.

So ask yourself, what is your financial emergency plan?

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - A Parkinson's Update & A Revelation

Parkinson's is crap... putting it simply.

When I had cancer, we had a treatment plan with a 90% success rate. So as awful as it was, there was light on the other side of that dark tunnel... life.

Parkinson's is so different, as there is no cure. What there is, is a range of medications that can help eliviate the symptoms of Parkinson's. For me, the side effects of the medication, was causing more issues than the original symptoms. After my 3rd attempt at meditation I have basically given up. The 3rd drug was levadopa, the gold standard in Parkinson's treatment and it made me very sick... literally vomiting after every pill. So I have decided no more.

I'm sick and tired of being sick, and everything that goes along with it.

I've accepted now that there is no light at the end of this dark tunnel.

I am now waiting to die. That is my future. My future is death. This is something that I cannot see past.

I'm not depressed or suicidal or anything like that. I just cant see a future... there is nothing. There are no dreams, no aspirations, not even the desire to win lotto. I can only live the day that I am presently in.

My only goal in life is to out live my cat, Max.

I know this makes  me difficult to be around, and most importantly make me  a difficult partner. I just have little interest in life and little motivation to enjoy life.

As for now I will play this charade that is called life, and when the time comes... I am looking forward to eternal rest. I am so bloody tired.

I have been struggling with these feelings for some time. The lack of interest in life. I've always had so much desire and motivation for life. The "what is wrong with me"  has been a challenging question to understand and answer.

Today I discovered a new word, well, I was aware of the word but when used in context to my situation, it is new to me.

 "Apathy"

Apathy describes a lack of interest, enthusiasm or motivation. This is me!

I did a little reading and it is a non-motor symptom of Parkinson's and interferes with the effective management of Parkinson's symptoms, since apathetic people are less inclined to exercise and follow their medication schedules. Again this is me!

Unfortunately there is no cure or magic pill to fix this.

I have been trying to find a way to fix myself... being the DIY guy I am. I have come up with 3 things to help:

1. Understanding, Acceptance, & Acknowledging - that is the purpose of this blog.

2. Try to find and cherish the pleasures in life as they present themselves.

3. Try to say YES more often.

But even as I write this, the hermit within me is like... "whatever"

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Feed Trough

I treat the sheep to sheep nuts, it's kinda like crack for a junkie, and the sheep go nuts for sheep nuts.

However throwing sheep nuts onto the ground, is a waste and they are not cheap. The nuts get trampled on, lost in the long grass, and if they get too wet the sheep don't eat them.

So this winter I am going to try something different.

I've built a feed trough, but I need to somehow to attach feet, to lift it off the ground... so work in progress.

The boys seem to like it.

UPDATE.... finished the 2nd one for the girls, and it's not bad if I do say so myself...

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - 100th Gate

It's been a struggle for the last two weeks, very slow going... but I have just finished my 100th gate!

It's actually a pair.

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Driveway Paddock, Sheep & 2 Gates

From the entrance of our property to the house the driveway is about 80m and  essentially runs through a paddock, far too big to be mown on a regular basis.

So to keep the grass down I have been putting the sheep in there during the day while Gary is at work.

Each time I have to close the entrance gate and put up a temporary fence to stop the sheep from getting in and around the house and gardens. Then before Gary gets home removing it all, so he can get to the house. A pain in the arse to be honest, a real hassle.

So I built a gate, actually 2 gates... take that Blake! My biggest trouble maker!

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Floating Gate

Hopefully this is enough to deter the sheep from crossing over to the neighboring property.

Our neighbors are subdividing their property and have put in a new drive and bridge crossing the creek adjacent to our property.  They have really tidied up the place and it's looking great.

However I needed to do something to stop the sheep from using the new thoroughfare to the neighbours.

Basically I have put my gate making skills to good use making the lightest gate possible that is strung up with wire and chains.

The idea is that when the creek is in a low flow situation, the gate just hangs there. But when the creek is in full flow the gate will swing and float up with the current. The gate can only swing one way, due to stones placed behind the gate up stream... but all is to be tested both by sheep and a flood.

All in all it looks good to me.

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Hey, Hey Hey... its Hay Time,!

Living with animals in Canterbury during winter you need an additional feed source, as the grass just doesn't grow.

Last year was the first time I had ever feed my Arapawa sheep hay, and this year is the first time we have made our own hay.

Kinda exciting, and kinda itchy at the same time.

I calculated that we need around 70 bales to get through winter, but we ended up with over 200! Our barn is choka! Anyone want some hay?

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Always Something To Do

Life on a lifestyle block is never dull. In between building gates, packaging Unicorn Fibre Cleaners orders, and the daily house hold chores there is still work to be done on the block.

We lack any significant trees, so there is little shelter from the elements, and I do worry about the sheep.

I've just finished the 3rd sheep shelter.  I still want to put on guttering to fill a water trough.

Hopefully it withstands the Canterbury winds. I've created a dirt mound on the inside so hopefully there is a dry surface in the winter.

The dirt is from a drain that  needed digging out, so I have can now tick 2 jobs off the never ending list.

For now back to building gates, a customer has just ordered 2 additional gates... repeat custom is what we dream for!

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Mr Whiskers vs Gate #2

Well my big boy has been at it again, he has destroyed another gate, I must admit it wasn't much of a gate to start with but I think I now have got him sorted this time.
