Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - AI and Photo Fun

Such fun... learning how to AI images by changing the photo style to a 3D character.

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Jack Frost & Winter Feeding

Some sheep are a little smarter than others.  The two ewes under the shelter regularly choosing this spot on frosty nights.

During the cooler months, the grass will stop growing when the ground temperature drops below 6°c. So it's important to have a good supply of hay to supplement the sheeps diet.

Having full bellies generates heat during the digestion process. An internal heater, heating the sheep from the inside out. Their wool also helps to reduce heat loss.

It might seem a little foreign to the sheep at first, but once they know hay is food, they will come running when a new bale is being feed out.

I have a garden trolley that fits a conventional hay bale nicely, so I just load that up and pull it out to the paddock. Easy!

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Wax Eyes

One mans waste, is another birds dinner. Wax Eyes feasting on our compost pile, and they're particularly interested in the banana skins. I like my bananas green and chalky, so I don't eat brown bananas, and there's often leftovers for the birds.

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - The Southern Lights

If you can brave the cold, the night has a magical feeling to it.

With your naked eye you can see a red tinge to the night sky... but your camera captures the true beauty.

Put your camera in night mode, hold steady and take a photo of the night sky looking south. Use a tripod or hold your phone steady against a clean window.

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Thai Pumpkin Soup

We had a dismal summer harvest this year, which I put it down to the unusually cooler summer temperatures, and the plants were very slow to get underway... but we did end up with 5 usable pumpkins.

I like pumpkins in that they are very easy to grow, easy to store and the crown pumpkin produces a good useable flesh yield.

I thought I would share this very simple, cheap and tasty Pumpkin Soup recipe. I only needed to use half of a pumpkin, and we had some leftover roast chicken from the night before... so I used that to garnish the soup... there was enough for 3 adult servings.

THAI PUMPKIN SOUP

2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp soft brown sugar
2 cloves garlic, crushed
1.2 kg pumpkin, peeled and diced (about 1 medium)
2 cups water
1 x 400ml can coconut milk
1-2 red chillies, finely chopped
1/2 tsp finely grated lemon zest, (optional)
1 tbsp fish sauce
salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup chopped coriander, or parsley

Method

Heat oil in a big pot and gently cook onion, sugar and garlic until softened (8-10 minutes).

Add all other ingredients except fresh coriander and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.

Mash roughly, adjust seasonings to taste and mix through coriander.

The recipe was from Anabelle Langbein.

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - It's raining sheep!

Well, that was a mission!

It's flooding across Loburn Terrace Road out the front of our place, which when the roadside drain starts to overflow... the water comes into our front paddock. I should have moved the sheep during the day, but I was hoping the drainage work that the council undertook last year, would have kept the water back, but unfortunately no.

Then I was thinking, well the sheep should stay out of the water and stay at the top end of the paddock, which misses the flood water... but no.

So about 9pm I decided to bring the sheep into the barn. Which was a mission in the dark, rain, and not to forget that I had to get them through a small side gate, that they have never gone through before.

But we did it!

They're now settled in for the night out of the rain and they have a midnight snack.

Hopefully they don't eat their way out of my makeshift fence of hay. 😅

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - Closing the Gate

Gate #393 is the last & final gate that I will make... for the foreseeable future.

A big Thankyou to all the people who ordered a gate. I really appreciate your support over the last 3.5 years.

Making 393 gates has kept me rather busy.

Having "retired" from a 9 to 5 job about 5 years ago, making gates was an enjoyable way to fill in my days.

Gate #393.

However in 2025, January and February were challenging months for me and my Parkinson's Disease issues and it had me questioning... everything about where my life is heading.

I like to be incontrol of my destiny, and it scares me when I am starting to lose that control.

My Parkinson's issues are numerous, and recently all seemed to step up a few gears in intensity. My balance, head pain issues, and at times just getting one leg in front of the other has been a challenge. Not to forget my right hand tremors doing their thing and at the most inconsiderate timing when using the drop saw and giving me a hell of a fright when the saw kicks back.

So I have decided to call an end to the gate making... for my own safety.

I'm now taking more than double of my Parkinson's medication, but although there seems to be a little improvement, Parkinson's is a progressive degenerative disease, there's no "getting better" pathway. It's more managing a lifestyle the best I can.

I'm very mindful, that a day will come in the near future where I will have to give up my lifestyle dream, living on my small farm. When I can't manage the day to day up keep, it's time to sell up and move back to town.

When that time comes, I will need to rehome my Arapawa Sheep... which will be heartbreaking as my breeding flock are my pets. They know me, I know their personality, I have names for some, they understand voice commands and hand signals.

In time, I will also need to find a new home for Unicorn Fibre Cleaners. So if anyone is interested in taking this on, please message me.

Once again, Thankyou for all the gate orders.

Achievements while making gates:
> Biggest Order: 24 Gates
> Number of Gates made in 7 days: 11
> Gates have been sold to customers across the South Island, from Blenheim to Invercargill.

Life Down Wattle Lane v2 - A Skink!

I've been spotting this little Canterbury Grass Skink over the last month... the biggest that I have seen, but by the time I get my phone out to take a photo it quickly scurries away... but not today, it hanged around for a couple pics.

Interestingly it seems to call home an area I fenced off and planted some natives, and the grass has gone wild as the sheep don't get at it.
